COMMON PROBLEMS WITH FENCE STAINING AND PAINTING

Stained wood fences, while beautiful, can face a variety of issues over time. That's why its critical you hire a fence staining and sealing company like Home Pros Painting. Common problems include fading, where the stain loses its vibrancy due to sun exposure and weathering. Peeling and cracking can occur if the stain isn't applied correctly or if the wood wasn't properly prepared. Additionally, mildew and mold can grow, especially in humid climates, causing discoloration and potential damage. To prevent these issues, it's crucial to use a high-quality stain, prepare the wood thoroughly, and re-stain regularly.

Peeling and cracking

If the stain is not applied properly or if the wood is not prepared correctly, the stain may peel or crack. This can leave the wood vulnerable to moisture damage and rot.

Mildew and mold

Stained wood fences can be susceptible to mildew and mold growth, especially in humid climates.

This can cause discoloration and damage to the wood.

Rot and decay

If the wood is not properly treated or if the stain is not applied regularly, the wood can rot and decay.

This can cause the fence to become structurally unsound and unsafe.

Staining Brand New Wood Fences

Staining a brand new fence is an essential step to protect and enhance its longevity and appearance. A fresh coat of stain acts as a protective barrier against the elements, shielding the wood from harmful UV rays, moisture, and pests. This preventative measure significantly extends the lifespan of the fence, preventing premature weathering, cracking, and warping.

Additionally, staining allows you to customize the color and finish of your fence, adding a touch of personal style to your outdoor space. By investing in a quality stain and applying it correctly, you'll ensure your new fence remains beautiful and sturdy for years to come.

Staining Over Already Stained Fences

Upkeeping the stain on an already stained fence is crucial to maintaining its appearance and structural integrity. Regular inspections are key to identifying any signs of wear, such as fading, peeling, or cracking.

A thorough cleaning with a mild detergent and water can remove dirt and mildew, ensuring the stain adheres properly. If the stain is starting to fade or peel, it's time for a fresh coat. Re-staining every 4-5 years, depending on the climate and exposure, will revitalize the color, protect the wood, and extend the fence's lifespan.

By following these simple maintenance practices, you can keep your stained fence looking beautiful and performing optimally for years to come.

Painting Wood Fences

While staining is generally preferred for wood fences due to its ability to allow the wood to breathe and age gracefully, once a fence has been painted, it requires a different maintenance approach.

Paint can trap moisture within the wood, potentially leading to rot and decay over time. Therefore, to preserve the integrity of a painted fence, it's essential to repaint it regularly. This not only maintains the aesthetic appeal but also acts as a protective barrier against the elements.

Regular repainting helps to prevent peeling, chipping, and fading, ensuring the fence remains durable and visually pleasing.

  • Do I need a fence permit to install a fence?

It all depends on where the house is located.  Some cities require a fence permit with a drawing of the layout of the fence.

  • Which type of stains are best for wood fences?

Exterior wood stains typically come as follows:

    • clear
    • transparent (you can have a hint of color)
    • semi-transparent
    • solid color

Stain and sealers help prolong the life of fences by keeping the sun's UV rays from damaging the wood.  Between the UV rays, rain, hail, and snow, fences will slowly start to weather and turn brown or black.

Eventually they dry out enough where they may start to crack and eventually fall apart.

Clear stains don't add any color to the fence and their primary funtion is to keep water from pentrating the wood.

Transparent stains may actually have a hint of color so you get protection and nice looks.  These allow the grain of wood to show.

Semi-transparents provide more protection than the previous two because the stain itself has some solid particles that allow for more protection.

Solid color stains provide the maximum protection and tend to last longer than ther other types of stains.

The more solid the stain, the less you will have to re-apply over the years.

  • When can you stain a brand new fence?

A brand new pressure treated fence must dry out for about 60 days before it can be stained.  The reason being is that the wood has been treated with preservatives to keep water or any other liquid from penetrating.  If you do stain a brand new pressure treated fence, the stain will likely peel quickly.

A brand new cedar or kiln dried wood fence can be stained or sealed immediately.  These materials have no preservatives or have dried out long enough that staining them won't be an issue.

  • How long does it take it take to install a fence?

It all depends if the old fence has to be removed and how long the new fence will be.

A standard 6ft privacy fence 200ft long will take about 4-5 days to complete. This includes removing the existing fence.
