Lap siding is available in a range of materials and sizes, including popular options like composite (engineered wood) in single, double 5, and triple 4 profiles, beveled cedar, and smooth board lap siding. Unfortunately, some older styles are no longer manufactured, making replacements difficult to find.
Drawing on over a decade of experience in the Olathe area, we’ve mastered the art of sourcing and installing all types of lap siding. This includes crucial steps like vapor barrier installation and using high-quality OSB (as shown in the image), often overlooked by other contractors.

Trim boards come in various materials and sizes, such as composite (engineered wood/Smartside), pine, cedar, and PVC.
Choosing the right material for each application is crucial. For instance, PVC is ideal for areas exposed to frequent water exposure (rain or sprinklers) as it won’t rot like wood. Pressure-treated wood, on the other hand, should never be used on surfaces that will be painted, as its preservatives can cause premature paint failure.

Simple science: wood rot, also known as wood decay, is primarily caused by fungi. These organisms thrive in moist environments and feed on the cellulose and lignin in wood, breaking down its structure and causing it to deteriorate.

Street smarts: technically there's various categories of wood rot such as wet rot, dry rot, soft rot, and many more. It all comes down to moisture not being able to evaporate properly due to different factors. These factors could be due to a design issue (water coming off roof) or improper drainage or lack of paint protecting the wood.
Simple science: it's all about allowing the wood to dry properly to keep the fungi away. There's moisture in just about every material but the key is to keep it between the ideal numbers of 10% to 14% if possible. You definitely to keep it under 20%.

Street smarts: allowing the house to dry up requires good gutters and downspouts, adequate paint on the surface, proper drainage, replacing any cracked wood, caulking gaps, and avoiding water hitting the same spots like with a sprinkler system. If it's impossible to do the above then perhaps using a PVC material may do the trick.

At Home Pros Painting And Home Repairs we offer more than just painting services.
If your home has wood rot, dry rot, splintered wood, holes in the siding, or any kind of damage we are the ones to call to get fixed ASAP. Our paint crews are capable of not only painting your house but also taking care of any exterior wood damage.
The cause of these issues is primarily wetness that doesn't allow the substrate to dry out enough to maintain proper moisture levels. All materials have some level of moisture but when that level gets too high for too long then it attracts fungi which start the process of decaying the wood.
Whether its fungi or wetness the bottom line is that it has to go. It needs to be removed from the house so it doesn't spread and create bigger structural problems.
The advantage of choosing Home Pros for your home repair is that you don't have to hire carpenters in addition to painters. Since we handle both kind of services you don't have to go through the hassle of getting multiple quotes and making time for people to show up to your house to provide estimates.
Trust Home Pros to give you peace-of-mind on your exterior carpentry project by conducting a 1 year follow up visit free of charge. No other company in the Kansas City area provides this service. We wonder why??
The cost to replace wood rot or siding on a house depends on various factors:
This is truly one of those projects where it has to be seen by the estimator (or perhaps a picture submitted to us) in order to see first hand what all is involved.
Our company has established pricing based on the size and type of lumber being replaced. So for example if you wanted to replace 1x3 size trim on the corners of your chimney then you would be looking at $45 per 8ft section. If you wanted to replace a sheet of siding you would be looking at $120. If the siding sheet is on the 2nd or 3rd level then it would be priced slightly more.
Our first goal with any carpentry work is to try and match what is in place. So if you have pine we replace with pine so everything matches.
At times it's more feasible to replace with a better grade material. An example would be that if you have a piece of trim that keeps rotting out where the down spouts are located then it might be best to install a piece of smart trim or PVC to keep from happening again in the future or at least prolong the rot from coming back.
One big challenge is trying to get the same design or size. The sizing and design are some times not available--especially if you have an older home. We wok with homeowners to come up with a viable solution that takes care of the problem with minimal impact to the aesthetics.
Our standard carpentry repair warranty is 1 year from completion.
The reason we can't go longer is that we have no control over the effect the environment plays on the house.
In the Kansas City area we go through some extreme conditions which causes houses to contract and expand. Depending on the amount of expansion and contraction, boards can move significanlty causing seams to split.
As a standard policy we use Sherwin Williams Powerhouse latex caulking. This is the 2nd best latex caulk that Sherwin Williams produces to help minimize these seam cracks.
Primer should be used on:
Think of primer as glue that bonds the surface being painted and the new paint.
Smart trim and PVC materials typically do not require primer as they already have a primer applied at the factory.
